The village of Praia da Luz (beach of light) was originally a fishing
village . It has lost none of its original charm and retains
a delightful Portuguese village feel. (Due to the fact that there are
no high rise complex style developments) There are local shops,
restaurants and beach side cafe bars all within walking distance. There
is a broad sandy beach which curves around towards the famous
'Black rock'. Luz beach is ideal for families.
Originally named 'Praia de Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Luz' (Beach of the
church of Our Lady of Light), this was obviously too much of a mouthfull, even for
the Portuguese, and it was shortened to Praia da Luz. Today the tourist industry
is shortening it still further to just 'Luz'.
To the east is the historic town of Lagos. The town has played an
important part in the story of discovery and there are many points of
interest such as the 17th century 'Forte de Bandeira'.
The centre of
the town has an abundance of cafes and quaint shops. It only takes
about 5 minutes by car, or if you prefer it is easy and fairly
inexpensive to go there and back by taxi. (there is a large taxi rank
area in the centre of Lagos) There are also buses that run
between Luz and Lagos.
To the west of Luz is the small fishing village of Burgau. The
village has a lovely sandy beach ideal for sunbathing or swimming. It
takes approx. 5 minutes to reach by car. There are still local
fisherman working out of the bay. The walk down to the beach through the charming village is a little steep.
Algarve Shopping, Albufeira. A great day out for those who love to shop.
Ideal for families as the complex includes a ten-pin bowling alley, multi-screen
cinema and a large food hall that has outlets catering for just about every taste.
Located on the N125, approximately 25 minutes drive from the apartment.
